There seems to be a belief to some that the HCG diet we hear so much about these days is one of those crazy new fads, and that it is either dangerous, or too good to be true.
Intriguingly, however, the HCG diet is not a new discovery, but was discovered in 1954 by Dr. Albert TW Simeons (1900-1970).
Who was Dr. Simeons?
Dr. Simeons was an English endocrinologist who studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, where he graduated with honors. Dr. Simeons completed post-graduate studies in Germany and Switzerland, during which time he joined the School of Tropical Medicine, in Hamburg.
In 1931, Dr. Simeons moved his practice to India. His studies there would lead him to publish a groundbreaking article on weight loss in 1952.
How did Dr. Simeons discover the HCG diet?
While living in India, Dr. Simeons studied a condition of the hypothalamus that seemed to cause obesity, among other symptoms, in otherwise healthy, young boys. This a connection between obesity and the hypothalamus led
Dr. Simeons to wonder about the role of HCG, which is made in the hypothalamus, in maintaining a healthy body weight. Soon after, Dr. Simeons would experiment with low dose injections of HCG as treatment. This research eventually led Dr. Simeons to establish what he termed the 'cure for obesity' – the HCG diet – in 1954.
If the HCG diet isn't a fad, what happened to it after 1954?
Though Dr. Simeons treated hundreds of patients, his research was published at a time of increased interest in weight loss and healthy body weight. The many important breakthroughs in these studies over the following decades ensured their publication in school books and in the media, but Dr. Simeons' research and the HCG diet would have to wait until the turn of the century before they, too, could be granted equal credence.

Dr. Simeons and the Discovery of HCG
The HCG diet is not a new breakthrough, but was discovered in 1954 by Dr. Albert TW Simeons (1900-1970). His studies there would lead him to publish a groundbreaking article on HCG and weight loss in 1952. While living in India, Dr. Simeons studied a condition of the hypothalamus that seemed to cause obesity, among other symptoms, in otherwise healthy young boys. This direct connection between obesity and the hypothalamus led Dr. Simeons to wonder about the role of HCG, a naturally occurring human hormone that originates in the hypothalamus, in maintaining a healthy body weight. Soon after, Dr. Simeons would experiment with low-dose injections of HCG as a treatment for obesity, with dramatic results. This research eventually led Dr. Simeons to establish what he termed the 'cure for obesity' – the HCG diet plan – in 1954.
Continuing Research into the HCG Diet Plan
During his years in India, Dr. Simeons studied the effects of malnutrition in expectant mothers as well as the causes and effects of obesity in patients with hormonal disorders of the pituitary gland. It was during the course of this research that he came to a startling conclusion about the nature of obesity.
In his seminal paper “Pounds & Inches: A New Approach to Obesity”, Dr. Simeons said this:
"...obesity in all its many forms is due to an abnormal functioning of some part of the body and that every ounce of abnormally accumulated fat is always the result of the same disorder of certain regulatory mechanisms. Persons suffering from this particular disorder will get fat regardless of whether they eat excessively, normally or less than normal. A person who is free of the disorder will never get fat, even if he frequently overeats."
Though Dr. Simeons treated hundreds of patients, his research was published at a time of increased interest in weight loss, nutrition, and human health. Many important breakthroughs in these and similar studies over the following decades found publication in research papers and the media, but Dr. Simeons' investigation of HCG and its effects on weight loss would wait until the turn of the century before they, too, would be granted equal exposure.
The Cure for Obesity
Dr. Simeons discovered that by administering low doses of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), a water-soluble hormone produced by the fetus during gestation, patients actually began burning fat instead of lean muscle tissue when fed a calorie-restrictive diet.
What has been discovered since that time is that HCG is responsible for the regulation of the hypothalamus gland, which controls metabolism and the use of energy sources in the body, such as fat. While everyone is born with an abundant supply of HCG, this is often depleted by adulthood. Replacement of the HCG hormone by ingesting HCG drops corrects the imbalance and reprograms the hypothalamus to use fat stores during times of reduced caloric intake.
What this means, in simple terms, is that the HCG diet plan, in conjunction with controlled ingestion of HCG drops, is, quite literally, a cure for obesity. In many cases, the tendency of the body to store excess fat is recognized as a biological disorder, and the HCG diet plan is a treatment regimen specifically designed to cure and reverse this disorder.
Dr. Simeons may never have appreciated the gravity of his research during his lifetime, but the groundbreaking work he performed provides a direct benefit to those who utilize the HCG diet plan today.
